London Police Officers in the Streets: Ideas from Household Words Vol. 3 Metropolitan Protectives”

London’s police force in the Victorian era was made of nearly 7000 members that are divided into twenty two different divisions.  They typically are found in the streets from 9 pm to 9 am and wear navy blue uniforms and have and carry a baton, rattle, lantern, oil skin cape, and a grey coat. They seem to have a progression of roles from constable, to sergeant, to inspector, and then to superintendent. These police are meant to be a helpful force in society and any case of neglect can be withheld against them. This is most likely the reason that in certain cases the officers were found providing a place for orphans who have been dropped off at doorsteps. Another item to note about the officers is that they are encouraged to find any household that is unoccupied and they may occupy these locations as they please. Any complaint that need to be made of these officers must be brought to Scotland Yard, white hall where the commissioners reside.
